Bearing Capacity of Soils, 1993Product #003-0005 — $35.00 This U.S. Army Corps of Engineers engineering manual, \IBearing Capacity of Soils\n, presents guidelines for caluclation of the bearing capacity of soil under shallow and deep foundations supporting various types of structures and embankments. The principles presented are applicable to numerous types of structures such as buildings and houses, towers and storage tanks, fills, embankments, and dams. The first chapter presents definitions, failure modes, and factors that influence bearing capacity. The next chapter discusses non-load related design considerations such as frost action and soil erosion. Chapter 3 explores laboratory and in situ methods of determining soil parameters required. The last two chapters present an analysis of the bearing capacity of shallow foundations and deep foundations, respectively. |

Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete and Commentary, 2002Product #003-0006 — $158.00 The code portion of this document covers the proper design and construction of buildings of structural concrete. The code has been written in such form that it may be adopted by reference in a general building code and earlier editions have been widely used in this manner. Among the subjects covered are: drawings and specifications; inspection; materials; durability requirements; concrete quality, mixing, and placing; formwork; embedded pipes; construction joints; reinforcement details; analysis and design; strength and serviceability; flexural and axial loads; shear and torsion; development and splices of reinforcement; slab systems; walls; footings; precast concrete; composite flexural members; prestressed concrete; shells and folded platemembers; strength evaluation of existing structures; special provisions for seismic design; structural plain concrete; strut-and-tie modeling in Appendix A; alternative design provisions in Appendix B; alternative load and strength-reduction factors in Appendix C; and anchoring to concrete in Appendix D. The quality and testing of materials used in construction are covered by reference to the appropriate ASTM standard specifications. Welding of reinforcement is covered by reference to the appropriate ANSI/AWS standard. Because the ACI Building Code is written as a legal document so that it may be adopted by reference in a general building code, it cannot present background details or suggestions for carrying out its requirements or intent. It is the function of this commentary to fill this need. The commentary discusses some of the considerations of the committee in developing the code with emphasis given to the explanation of new or revised provisions that may be unfamiliar to code users. References to much of the research data referred to in preparing the code are cited for the user desiring to study individual questions in greater detail. Other documents that provide suggestions for carrying out the requirements of the code are also cited. |

Classic Wood Structures, 1989Product #003-0006 — $23.00 Wood has been used in a wide range of structural applications. When properly maintained, these structures can have a useful life from 50 years to several centuries. Thirty-seven unusual wood structures are described in detail. They include innovative structures like Tacoma Dome and the Air Force TRESTLE; atypical structures like U.S.S. Constitution and the Mosquito bomber; and very durable structures like Norwegian stave churches and covered bridges. The publication is intended to present both the history and design of these various structures. Thus, engineers and architects will encounter ideas that should help them use a significant renewable resource in a more efficient manner. |

Design of Latticed Steel Transmission Structures, ASCE 10-97Product #003-0007— $42.00 This updated standard, Design of Latticed Steel Transmission Structures (ASCE 10-97)\N, provides requirements for the design of guyed and self-supporting latticed steel electrical transmission structures. They are applicable for hot-rolled and cold-formed steel shapes. Analysis techniques are outlined for the geometrical configurations presently in use. Procedures for the design of individual members reflect extensive experience and test data on steels with yield points up to 65 ksi. Connection design procedures allow the engineer to match connection capability to the most suitable end and edge distances for detailing. If full scale structure testing is required procedures are outlined to assist in obtaining critical information. Design procedures cover structural steel members and connections used in foundations. The commentary provides supporting background data. |

Mechanical Connections in Wood Structures, ASCE Manual 84, 1996Product #003-0010 — $43.00 This ASCE Manuals and Reports on Engineering Practice No. 84, \IMechanical Connections in Wood Structures\n, gives state-of-the-art design and research information on mechanical fasteners used in wood connections. A connection consists of two or more members joined with one or more mechanical fasteners. Mechanical connections are defined as those where fasteners penetrate the wood. It is intended to help design professionals apply engineering judgment for those many connection details not covered by standard design codes. The mechanical fastener types included in this manual are: 1) nails, spikes, and staples; 2) lag screws and wood screws; 3) bolts, drift bolts, and pins; 4) metal connector plates; and 5) timber connectors. |

Numerical Methods in Structural Mechanics, 1996Product #003-0014 — $72.00 This book provides a clear understanding of the nature and theoretical basis of the most widely used numerical methods\=the finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM)\=while at the same time presenting the most promising directions for future developments. Attention is paid mainly to those methods that have proven to be the most reliable and efficient, as well as those methods currently under rapid development. Examples were selected either to illustrate various computational algorithms and compare their accuracy and efficacy or to elucidate the mechanical processes under investigation, while traditional examples that are already covered by standard textbooks have been deliberately omitted. Emphasis is placed on the understanding of basic principles, rather than on the details of individual numerical algorithms. The book covers all topics essential for students of elementary and intermediate courses on numerical methods in solid mechanics, and it also serves as a useful reference for researchers and other professionals. This book was recently translated from the highly regarded, original Czech edition. |
